  • Eligibility varies depending on the type and source of aid. For aid from the federal and state government and from state-funded colleges and universities, you must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen (as defined in the FAFSA instructions). You must complete the FAFSA.
  • If you are an undergraduate who has filed a FAFSA and are a California resident and do not already have a bachelor’s degree, you are also eligible for a Cal Grant.
  • Eligibility for private scholarships depends on the scholarship—they are funded by private individuals and organizations and can have whatever eligibility requirements they want.
  • Sometimes students think that scholarships are only available to athletes. It’s important to know that there are many times more scholarships for good grades than for sports and even more just based on financial need.
