On October 13th, UC eligible EAOP students from the nine high schools representing three counties will learn what it is like to be a UC student during Achieve UC. Dr. Rios, UCSB Professor of Sociology, will kick-off the event with a mock lecture in Corwin Pavilion. Afterwards, students will hear admission and financial aid application presentations, tour UCSB, and have lunch with UCSB undergraduates during their day on campus. "What a great day for our EAO high school students to engage the campus, learn from Dr. Rios, hear about admissions and financial aid, and interact with current UCSB undergraduates!" said EAOP Director Britt Ortiz. Future UC applicants will join UCSB first generation college students for lunch to learn from their experience. "We share our stories of being the first generation college students because stories can open the imagination for what is possible and the multiple pathways students can take to reach their goals. We want students to know there's multiple support systems at the UC and an active community willing to share their stories, encouragement, and guidance," shared Catalina Mendiola, EAOP College Site Coordinator for Santa Paula High School. "Our goal for Achieve UC is to help students understand the difference between the myths around admissions to the UC and the reality of how affordable, attainable, and welcoming the UC system really can be when you know the ins and outs of the admissions and financial aid process. We want too assure our Early Academic Outreach Program seniors and juniors that they can enroll in the UC System either as a first time freshman or as a transfer student and that we are here to help guide them along the entire process" concluded Ortiz.
