EAOP Alumni to Head College Going Efforts at South High School in Kern

by Mikayla Molinaro | Oct 09, 2017

EAOP Alumna Mirka Lopez prepared for her role as college site coordinator while a college student. At CSU Bakersfield, she joined the CAMP team to enroll students from the migrant program. After receiving the baton from Ms. Mendiola, who served as the EAOP College Site Coordinator at South High School for over 10 years, Ms. Lopez joined the EAOP team in June. She immediately began assisting students with our Community College Book Stipend Project, which allowed 13 to take a community college class over the summer. She organized her first College Readiness Academy with 30 students who regularly attended the workshop. During the academy, she recruited five EAOP alumni to share their education abroad experiences in Italy, Africa, and multiple countries. Students also engaged in a culminating activity that asked them to write about their commitment to themselves and their fears about the future, which she posted in the hall way visited frequently by all staff. Ms. Lopez will no doubt bring her talents, work ethic, and enthusiasm for higher education to South High School. Mirka is excited to take on this new journey, "South High has always been a home away from home. Thanks to the support and guidance my teachers and counselors gave me, I was able to succeed. Now it's my turn to give that opportunity to others."
